When I was 18 I had big plans to take a gap year after school and travel. The only place I travelled to was the maternity ward at my local hospital.

Hi there! I’m Rebecca and I’m the voice behind Maverick Mum. I'm from a little town in Northern Ireland called Castledawson, where I lived with my mum, dad, brother, sister, son, 2 dogs, a cat and a fish. When I turned 18 I became pregnant with Reuben (happy birthday me), and that’s how I ended up with a one way ticket to motherhood, with absolutely no idea what I was doing.

I am now 21, Reuben is a terrifying toddler, and I still have no idea what I’m doing. But we've gotten this far!

I’ve had an interest in the blogging world for a few years now. My 16 year old self didn't have the patience for writing. I guess I was too busy studying too busy hatching master plans to lie to my parents and sneak out of the house. My 21 year old self still doesn't have much patience. But the blogging world has been my saving grace since having Reuben. When it's 3am and you're googling 'how to get a booger out of a newborn's nose', who knows where you're going to end up. So that's how 'Maverick Mum' was born.

I’m not a conventional mother. In fact, I’m still getting used to the fact I reproduced. Sometimes I have mini panic attacks, usually in the shower, and I think “I have a child. I am 100% responsible for a whole other person!! How did this happen?!" (Actually, I will probably tell you how it happened. I tell too much.) I mean come on - I’m single. I’m still in education. I can’t iron without burning clothes. I can’t cook without burning myself. And I can’t clean without...actually, I can clean. I just don’t like to (sorry Mum).

However, in the last 2 years I’ve learned one thing - just because something isn’t conventional, doesn’t mean it can’t work. (I’ve also learned to get up before 7am - anything is possible).

My hope for this space is that I can encourage and entertain. Even if you just laugh and think, “At least I’m not Rebecca”. I hope you’ll join me as I figure out this whole parenting thing. You can expect lots of honesty, adventures and tears (mostly mine, Reuben is pretty chill). Talk to you soon! X

EDIT Reuben and I have made the big move to Belfast where I go to University. Join me as I learn how to pay bills and find new and exciting ways to make dinner out of Spaghetti Hoops.

About Reuben - He doesn't talk very coherently...or type for that matter. But if he did, it would go something like this.

I am fiercely independent and maintain a carefree attitude. In fact, when my mum tries to tell me off, I quite often reply with, "No cares". I spend a lot of my spare time in the fridge and standing on window sills. I enjoy outdoor adventures and quite frankly I love running as far away as possible from my mum. I am passionate about hoovers and turkey dinosaurs. I like any game that involves a ball, and if you want me to be quiet just feed me cheese. I love to make friends with everyone I meet and I’m a very generous kisser. For now, I reckon that’s all you need to know.
